The MARES Consortium and EuroMarine Network are pleased to invite you to participate in the

Mares Conference

Marine Ecosytems Health and Conservation

 February 1st to 5th 2016, Olhão, Portugal

Marine environments are generally considered as highly valuable and their health and conservation status are seen as key priorities, however, marine wildlife and habitats are facing multiple anthropogenic threats ranging from eutrophication to overfishing and ocean acidification. There is an urgent need to advance our understanding of the threats to the marine environment and to provide constructive guidelines for conservation and management strategies. The Mares Conference 2016 will take place in this context, aiming to address the main issues regarding marine ecosystems health and conservation.

Through six leading themes, this international and open conference will bring together marine scientists, educators, and non-academic stakeholders from different levels and disciplines to discuss  the impact of human activities on the natural marine environment. The conference aims to be dynamic and innovative, by providing a mixture of oral presentations, scientific exhibitions and training workshops. The small-scale, relaxed and multigenerational nature of this event will foster knowledge exchange, networking and new collaborations.

The conference will be hosted in Olhão, Portugal, located at the edge of the spectacular Ria Formosa Natural Park. Olhão is the largest fishing port in the Algarve and is known for it's fishing industry, Moorish-style houses and busy waterfront.

The Mares Conference on Marine Ecosystems Health and Conservation 2016 is an initiative from the MARES Joint Doctoral Programme and EuroMarine Network.
